‘The real story is not the plot, but how the characters unfold by it.’ (Vanna Bonta)

Ideas come and go. And right when you write them down, you might get stuck at the plot.

You start writing that story cause you’ve got all the characters cleared out in your head. You know how to start it cause you think about how the main characters meet. As simple as that, your story comes alive. So far so good till you’re stuck at the neverending question ‘what comes next?’.

To make your story more appealing, you have to have a crystal clear picture of the plot. More exactly, of how your characters develop throughout your story.

Let’s take a love story. First, it’s the main characters meeting. You got it. Now what? Think about what could go wrong with their relationship. How other factors influence it. Test them to show the reader how strong their bond is. It’s also about the kind of feeling you want to highlight through them. Be it a story with a happy ending or not. But you want to prove something, right? You want the reader to pay attention to something. Something that only your characters can show through the plot you’re building.

I’m curious about how writers build their plot. What does it take to make them think: ‘this is how the story must go’?
